I'm a Jungian analyst and psychotherapist working in Grey Lynn, Auckland and offer a personal and confidential approach to your personal and psychological development.
What is Jungian Analysis?
Jungian analysis (or analytical psychology) is a psychoanalytic process developed by Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist who was one of the pioneers of depth psychology, or the psychology of the unconscious. The unconscious is that part of us that our ego has no control over and can be seen in habits we can’t break or emotional states that grip us, causing us to behave in ways we often regret. The Jungian process has at its core that in order to become a whole person, we need to bring together our ego consciousness and the unconscious into a relationship, a process called ‘individuation.’ This is about making meaning out of our lives and becoming who we have the potential to be, moving beyond the constraints of our previous experiences. Jungian analysis therefore doesn’t just seek to alleviate symptoms or change behaviour, it also has a future orientation that seeks to develop our full and creative potential.
The process is facilitated through two people working together (analyst and analysand) in a relationship that explores the dynamics of the psyche. While past events are revisited (when you’re ready to), the process also explores your contemporary relationships and issues, along with dreams and other imaginative and symbolic expressions of the unconscious. The process evolves gradually, offering support and guidance while you work towards resolving difficulties and finding the space to discover new possibilities.
My approach
I work primarily from this perspective, with emphasis on the individuation process, dream work, early life deficits, trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, loss and grief.
I offer Jungian analysis and psychotherapy primarily to individuals, in sessions that are normally 50 minutes long and are best scheduled on a regular weekly basis. I'm also licensed to provide a personality profile for individuals or groups using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Developing an MBTI personality profile may be a useful self-awareness tool for those who want to find out more about their personality and how they interact with others. I also offer professional supervision to people training to be analysts or psychotherapists and other health professionals.
Session bookings are available during the day on Thursdays or Fridays, or I can offer a limited number of early evening sessions during the week. Telephone or Skype consultations are also possible if you live outside of Auckland.
In addition to private practice, I also work part-time at the University of Auckland as a curriculum developer, coordinator and lecturer in the Personal and Professional Skills domain for the medical programme. I have had many years of experience as a senior academic in the tertiary sector, as curriculum developer, teacher and researcher in the health sciences. I have also worked for Lifeline as a counsellor and trainer.
